Man Charged With Grandmother's Murder

  • {Kentucky}...Officials in Laurel County said Thursday that preliminary autopsy results on Bernice Champlin, a woman allegedly murdered by her grandson Wednesday, indicate she died of a gunshot wound to the head but was also severely beaten in the face and stabbed in her body. Deputies responded to Champlin's home on Queen Road in Lily after receiving a 911 dispatch report of a disturbance, but, as deputies responded to the scene, dispatch upgraded the call to a shooting. A man at the home told deputies his brother, Jeremy Owens, was still inside his 74 year old grandmother's house armed with a pistol and that Jeremy Owens had shot Champlin. Owens barricaded himself in his grandmother's residence and refused to come out for several minutes. Champlin was pronounced dead at the scene, and Owens was charged with murder.
