Knott County Faces Tough Budget

  • {Kentucky}...With $1.5 million in lost revenue, Knott County Judge Executive Randy Thompson says the county is in a dire situation, but he does not think the magistrates understand the severity of the problem. The Fiscal Court voted to relinquish control of the horse trail ride to an impartial committee. Thompson says, although the Knott County Fiscal Court made some decisions Wednesday, they did not do enough to save the county budget. Thompson told the Fiscal Court that, if they do not find new sources of revenue, the county will shut down November 1, 2011. If the county does shut down November 1st, only offices mandated by the state will remain open. Thompson says he is going to provide a 60 day notice to the Kentucky River Area Development District that they're probably going to have to cancel the contract with them, leaving no more funding for the senior citizens program. A fiscal court meeting is set for September 19th.
