Notice Filed Against Johnson County Mine

  • {Paintsville, Kentucky}...The Sierra Club and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth say they have filed a legal 60-day notice of intent to sue Laurel Mountain Resources, the operator of the Bear Hollow surface mine, accusing the company of discharging selenium without a permit, polluting waters in Johnson County. The groups, which filed the notice in federal court in London, say selenium is harmful to aquatic life and at high levels can harm humans. The notice gives Laurel Mountain a two-month window to address problems before a suit is filed.
