Pikeville Preparing For Major Business Expansion

{Pikeville, Kentucky}...Pikeville City Commissioners and a developer say a new 200,000 square foot shopping center is coming to Pikeville. City Manager Donovan Blackburn says the strip mall to be built on Thompson Road will have dozens of new stores. City Commissioners announced all the new plans during a meeting on Monday night. Part of the new shopping center will be built where the main Pikeville Post Office is, and the post office will re-locate in a new space in the shopping center. Plans were unveiled for a new eight story, 114 room  Hilton Garden Hotel to be built next to the Hampton Inn. The hotel will have a restaurant and outdoor event space on the rooftop. Brad Hall with Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce says it will create an opportunity to bring in conventions and other tourism events. Developers say, once the new businesses are open, there will be 300 new jobs. Commissioners also approved $175,000 dollars in tax incentives for coal company Alpha Natural Resources to locate its headquarters in Pikeville, bringing 60 new jobs. Alpha still has to finalize a deal with the building's owner.
