Beshear Orders UPike Feasibility Study

{Frankfort, Kentucky}...Governor Steve Beshear said Tuesday he has ordered a study to look into the advisability and feasibility of adding the privately run University of Pikeville to the state's public university system. Last week, House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, and former Governor Paul Patton, who is president of the University of Pikeville, proposed that the private university be taken into the state system, noting that none of the eight current state universities are located in the coal counties of southeastern Kentucky. Proponents say Kentucky's mountain residents need a four-year state university closer to their homes than the two nearest them, Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University. Robert King, president of the Council on Postsecondary Education, which oversees higher education in the state, recommended the study be done by an outside party because Patton is currently chairman of the Council on Postsecondary Education.
