Perry County Woman Competent To Stand Trial

{Hazard, Kentucky}...Forty-two year old Sarah Melton has been found competent to stand trial after being charged in the shooting of her brother Kirby William "Bill" Couch and the shooting death of his girlfriend Cindy Caudill. On June 28th, Kentucky State Police in Hazard responded to a shooting in the Brownsfork community of Perry County and discovered that Bill Couch was involved in a dispute with his sister. Couch and Cindy Caudill were traveling on an ATV when Sarah Melton fired one shot with a shotgun, striking both vicitms. Cindy Caudill was pronounced dead at the scene. Couch was flown to the UK Medical Center in stable condition. Sarah Melton was arrested and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit murder. Melton's lawyers plan to use an insanity defense. A trial date has not been set.
