University Of Pikeville Seeks Public Status

{Pikeville, Kentucky}...University of Pikeville President Paul Patton confirmed Wednesday that discussions are underway about making the private university a part of the state's public higher-education system. Patton says the annual cost to attend Pikeville now is more than $16,000, compared with $6,5000 to $7,000 at state-supported regional universities. Governor Steve Beshear has been asked to support the  push. Proponents say Kentucky's mountain residents need a four-year state university closer to their homes than the two nearest them, Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University. The legislature would have to approve making Pikeville a state university. Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo of Prestonsburg endorsed the idea.
