Mom Wrecks...Injuring Infant Children

  • {Barbourville, Kentucky}...Knox County Sheriff's Deputies say Shannan Messer was intoxicated when she crashed her car on KY 1304 about 4:30 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, injuring her two infant children. Messer told deputies her twin six week old daughters were also in the wreck, but she took them to a nearby house. Deputy Brian Hensley located the girls. Witnesses told Hensley one of the girls was thrown into the front floor board, and the other was in a baby carrier in the back that fell out when the door was opened. Both girls were flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center where they were admitted in ICU. Messer, who was treated for minor injuries, was taken to the Knox County Jail and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
