Former Hazard Police Chief Dies

{Hazard, Kentucky}...Former Hazard Police Chief Rod Maggard has died after a more than two year battle with colo-rectal cancer. Maggard was born in Harlan County, was in the Air Force and served in Vietnam and became a state police trooper stationed in Hazard in 1967. He was chief when President Bill Clinton came to town in 1999, and he later testified before Congress about the drug problem in eastern Kentucky. Maggard left the Hazard Police Department and became the first director of the new Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center in 2002. He was diagnosed with cancer just as he was beginning a campaign for sheriff in early 2010.
