{Pikeville, Kentucky}...Pikeville Police say about 6:45 A.M. Thursday morning, they received a call that a man was inside Lowe's on Cassidy Boulevard in Pikeville with a gun, and shots had been fired. Barry Cates, Jr., 51, of Ivel, an employee at the store, was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment. He was later charged with possession of firearm by a convicted felon. Police say Cates had fired two rounds from a .22 caliber handgun. They say Cates and another employee had an ongoing dispute, and Cates had gone to the store to apparently shoot the man, who was not at work. Det. Phillip Reed, of the Pikeville Police Department says Cates admitted he intended on shooting another employee and to then shoot him self. Police aren’t sure why Cates still fired the gun and what he was aiming at. Cates spent seven years in prison for writing a threatening letter to President Reagan in 1982. He is being held at the Pike County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
