Forty-nine year old Rick Conn, a retired Kentucky State Police Trooper who once lived in the Ivel community of Floyd County, died Tuesday in South Carolina, where he now lives. In November 2004, a pipeline ruptured and burst into flames in Conn's neighborhood near the Floyd-Pike County line. Flames poured into Conn's SUV and set him on fire, leaving him with severe burns. Conn heard a neighbor and her 2 year old daughter screaming for help from inside their collapsing home and rushed into the house and got them to safety, before collapsing from his injuries. Conn suffered second and third degree burns on his hands, neck and face and spent about a month in the hospital. Conn received several honors following the explosion which leveled four houses and burned for an entire day.
