Governor Beshear Directs Flags to Half-staff in Honor of Fallen Bardstown Officer

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Steve Beshear has  directed that flags at all state office buildings be displayed at half-staff on Thursday, May 30, 2013, in a mark of respect for Officer Jason Ellis, a fallen Bardstown police officer.

Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute Thursday, which is the day of Officer Ellis’ funeral and interment.

“We grieve with Officer Ellis’ family and fellow law enforcement officers at this unspeakable loss. Our prayers are with them,” Gov. Beshear said. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of someone committed to a career of protecting others. And we know his fellow law enforcement officers are working to bring his killer to justice.”

According to Kentucky State Police, the officer, who was in uniform, was shot and killed outside his cruiser early Saturday on the Exit 34 ramp of the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County. State police describe the shooting as an ambush and have appealed to the public for tips and information in the case.
