Woman Dies in Pickup vs. Coal Truck Crash

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. -- A woman died, and four others were injured Wednesday in a crash between a pickup truck and a coal truck on U.S. 23 near the intersection of Ky. 201, Johnson County authorities say.

It appears the woman killed was riding in the bed of the blue Chevrolet pickup truck. Johnson County Coroner J.R. Frisby said he was called to the scene after reports of a fatality.

The woman who died is identified as 36-year-old Maranda Martin.

A man believed to be riding in the bed of the pickup truck was seriously hurt and flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital. Both the man and Martin were thrown from the pickup truck.

Three other people riding in the cab of the pickup truck were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The crash was reported just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, closing two lanes of U.S. 23 for several hours.

Investigators say it appears the pickup truck, which was pulling a trailer loaded with wood, had turned south onto U.S. 23 from Ky. 201 when it was struck from behind by the coal truck.

The driver of the coal truck was not hurt.
