Additional Information Released in Death of Martin County Inmate



The United States Department of Justice has released more information, including a victim's name, following an incident at a federal prison.

On December 2, 2013, at approximately 3:15 p.m., an incident occurred between multiple inmates in a housing unit at the United States Penitentiary, Big Sandy, Kentucky.

Staff immediately responded to the area. Inmate Gregory Kittle was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries. He was subsequently pronounced dead at 4:28 p.m. The FBI was notified, and an investigation continues. An autopsy has been ordered.

Inmate Gregory Kittle was a 32-year old male serving a 113-month sentence for simple assault, assault with intention to kill, assault on law enforcement officer, threats to injure a person, and possession of a firearm. He was sentenced in the District of Columbia Superior Court, and had been in custody at USP Big Sandy since October of 2012.

No staff or other inmates were injured. The institution was placed on lockdown status. All inmates are secured with no threat to the public.
