Former Mayor Pleads Guilty to Drug Charge

The former mayor of a small eastern Kentucky city has pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge.

According to court records, Danny Sparks entered the plea in Carter County Circuit Court to a felony charge of marijuana trafficking.

Sparks resigned as mayor of Olive Hill in late 2012 shortly after being arrested.

His attorney, Robin Webb, said terms of the plea deal call for prosecutors to recommend a two-year sentence and "stand silent" on whether Sparks should receive probation.

Police say Sparks was arrested Nov. 28, 2012 after he sold marijuana to an undercover informant in a parking lot near Olive Hill Elementary School.

Sentencing was set for Jan. 6.
