Members of the Marmet Volunteer Fire Department hung out at the fire station on Tuesday like most days, but unlike most days a black cloud hangs over the department. Instead of the fellowship of joking and camaraderie there was a somber air in the bays as each member leaned on one another for support at the loss of a friend and a leader.
Assistant Chief Jerry McGhee died suddenly on Monday. He was 35.
Members of the fire department sat around Tuesday trying to comprehend the loss of such a close friend at such a young age.
McGhee also served on the Marmet Town Council.
McGhee served 16 years on the fire department. There will be a full fireman’s funeral for him, but arrangements on the service are still incomplete.
