Two men who disappeared while kayaking Saturday night at Breaks Interstate Park were found safe Sunday morning. Rescuers began searching for the two men, from West Van Lear and Lexington, Saturday evening, after one man’s girlfriend reported that they hadn’t returned. The men had attempted to kayak in the Towers area on the Russell Fork River. By 11:30 that night, the men were able to contact authorities to report that they had safely gotten out of the river. Park Superintendent Austin Bradley says one thing visitors to park should know is that many areas of the river are not for beginners.
Rescuers were able to pinpoint the men’s exact location by tracking their cell phone. They were recovered in an extremely rugged and isolated area of the park. About a dozen agencies from Kentucky and Virginia assisted in the search. To assist in the recovery, CSX halted all rail traffic, so park personnel could take an ATV down the railroad in order to get to the men. The men were recovered unharmed, around 9 o’clock Sunday morning.
