Pikeville man faces cruelty charge

A Pikeville man is facing an animal cruelty charge after he allegedly abandoned his dog while running from police. 25-year-old Jordan C. Johnson was arrested Tuesday after police received a report of an  intoxicated man standing in a roadway. Pikeville Police Officer Billy Ratliff wrote in the arrest citation that Johnson ran from officers who, while looking for Johnson, found his dog chained to a drainpipe and unable to move. When Johnson was located by officers he was observed as unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech, according to the citation. He was charged with public intoxication and second-degree cruelty to animals. Pikeville Police Det. Bruce Collins told EKB-TV News the dog was in imminent danger while chained to the pipe.

The dog is currently being kept at the Pike County Animal Shelter in Pikeville.
