The Wayne County, West Virginia Board of Education website was hacked Wednesday by someone claiming to be part of the Islamic State, state police said.
“When internet users visit the Board of Education’s website they are actually re-directed to another site which promotes Islamic terrorism,” WVSP Lt. Michael Baylous said.
The agency’s digital forensics unit and the FBI are investigating.
“This type of incident is occurring more often across the country. No specific threats have been made and the public should be reminded that this is simply a tactic used by groups such as the Islamic state in an attempt to instill fear in the general public,” Baylous said.
The Wayne County Board of Education fielded several calls from parents concerned about their students.
