Audit raises issues in Magoffin County
Auditors reviewing Magoffin County Sheriff Carson Montgomery’s 2013 property tax and oil and gas tax settlements have raised a number of concerns. Reports released today by state Auditor Adam Edelen’s office report that the office did not use a uniform system of accounting, and noted that a nearly $3,000 deficit from 2010 has still not been resolved. The audit also found that eight checks for collected taxes were prepared and signed but never distributed. And despite a requirement to prepare the annual tax settlement by Sept. 1, the audit found that last year’s settlement was not complete until Nov. 24. The sheriff’s office provided no response to the auditor’s comments.
