Democrat Mike Denham will not seek re-election in Ky. House

(AP) — A Democratic state representative from Maysville says he will not seek re-election next year.

In a news release, Mike Denham called it an "agonizing decision" but said he can "no longer ignore my doctor's warnings." He did not say what those warnings were.

Denham has been in the House since 2001. Democrats and Republicans will fight over his seat in what is sure to be a contentious election cycle as Republicans are just four seats shy of taking control of the House for the first time since 1920.

Republican state Rep. Bob DeWeese is also not seeking re-election. Republican state Reps. Ryan Quarles and Mike Harmon are resigning after winning elections as agriculture commissioner and auditor. And Democratic Rep. John Tilley is resigning to work in Gov. Matt Bevin's administration.
