(AP) — A Martin County man has died after a tree fell on his family's mobile home, trapping four of his family members as well.
Rescuers were able to free the four relatives early Saturday, but 56-year-old Larry Whitt died in the accident.
Martin County Sheriff John Kirk says the four rescued family members — three women and an 18-year-old man — sustained relatively minor injuries.
Kirk says that the oak tree that caused the accident appeared to have grown in the thin soil of an old coal bank on a hillside behind the home.
He says rescuers and community members used chain saws and their hands to clear debris from the house so Whitt's body could be removed.
