West Virginia state trooper dies during training routine

(AP) — West Virginia State Police say a trooper has died after experiencing an unspecified medical problem during physical fitness training.

State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous says in a news release that 50-year-old First Sgt. Joseph G. Portaro of Clarksburg was pronounced dead at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston on Monday.

Baylous says Portaro had been participating in training near the State Police Academy grounds in Institute.

Portaro was a 17-year State Police veteran. He had been assigned to the State Police Academy as deputy director of training. He was a 1987 graduate of West Virginia University and enlisted in the State Police in 1998.
